Khokhloma

Khokhloma usually delights by nicety and grace of ornamental patterns, which never exactly repeat, existing in the great number of variants, reflecting inexhaustible fantasy of masters and their individuality.

Gold khokhloma is the bright, original phenomenon of the Russian folk decorative art. This traditional artistic trend has got more than tercentenary history. It originated in the XVII century in the village of Khokhloma near the city of Nizhni Novgorod. Since ancient times this wooded country was famous for remarkable turners and carvers. Besides, local artists invented an original method of woodwork painting, imitating gilding. Technique of khokhloma painting was preserved almost without changes to our time: cups, scoops, plate-racks are turned from linden-tree or aspen, then covered by special primer, rubbed by aluminium powder (tin was used in ancient times), painted by heat-resistant paints, which do not change their colour at high temperature. Silver pattern is transformed into "gold" by means of lacquer coating. Traditional decorative pattern of climbing herbs and flowers, festive colours, combining fiery cinnabar, black colour and sparkling gold, impart authentic jewelry to khokhloma wares. They are not sensitive to hot water and food acids.

Khokhloma wares, sparkling with splendour of gold and lacquers, pleasing by colourful, poetic painting, enjoy great popularity all over the world. They are exported to 25 countries, confirming world-wide glory of the Russian folk decorative art.
